CORTO. REV is recruiting a Director, Corporate Communications at BDC.   

Your mission: Reporting to the Assistant Vice-President, Communications and Outreach, you:

  1. Lead BDC’s media relations, financial and corporate communications, translation and editing services as well as its community investment program. 
  1. Are accountable for the design and oversight of external communications programs, including a hands-on approach to managing sensitive and complex reputational risks; 
  1. Are responsible for making sure that corporate communications projects are carried out within given budgets and standards, ensuring that they encourage entrepreneurs to trust BDC and develop a positive predisposition when considering its services; 
  1. Manage and support the development of a high-performance and dedicated team (5 resources with 1-2 consultants as needed), responsible for the delivery of the company’s national and regional communications/positions as well as related communication products and activities (e.g., annual report, annual general meeting).

  1. Lead the redesign of the practice of reputational risk (identification of new reputational risks, how they are treated and development of tools to prevent them).

Your specific responsibilities: 

  • Develop strategies for managing complex and sensitive reputational issues, crisis, endorsement requests, draft messages to the media and liaise with the employee communications team to ensure consistency in terms of internal and external messages. Identify any situations likely to impact BDC’s reputation.
  • Oversee management of the translation, proofreading and editing function for the Bank, ensuring overall and consistent quality of all corporate documents.
  • Represent BDC in discussions and negotiations with Shareholder communications’ teams at ISED, Finance and other government partners ensuring a coordinated approach and a smooth and timely transfer of information, in close coordination with the Government Relations team.

  • Responsible for maintaining and enforcing Reputational Risk Corporate Directive, including advising Integrated Risk Management team on new potential reputational risks, how they are being addressed and develop tools to prevent them. Quarterly reporting to Operational Risk Management Committee.
  • Oversee development and implementation of an annual public speaking and positioning plan for the Chief Economist, other spokespersons and subject matter experts, including strategies and daily community management of Chief Economist social media, as well as for BDC Capital.
  • Interact with journalists and editors on behalf of BDC and its senior executives on often sensitive, confidential and complex matters.
  • Ensure development and execution of national community investment program, including alignment with overall ESG strategy and efforts.
  • Maintain and ensure adherence and regular updates to corporate communications guidelines (e.g. public notices, media relations protocols).
  • Define yearly targets for key performance indicators (KPI) that measure the success and alignment of each activity/event, including increased visibility, engagement, and sentiment. Oversee KPI performance and put in place corrective action, when required.
  • Ensure a high level of awareness of corporate communications activities with BDC employees to ensure a coordinated and unified approach with other regional, local and line of business activities.
  • Establish and strengthen processes and standards that promote efficiency, change management and communications excellence.
  • Manage financial resources related to team activities.
  • Champion cross-functional communications/relationships.


Desired studies and experiences: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication or equivalent training.
  • A minimum of seven years of experience in communications in a medium to large organization with a national presence, with experience in the following areas: public relations, crisis management, executive communications.
  • Five years of experience leading a team and managing budgets.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of policies and processes.
  • Experience in financial communication is an asset.
  • Control of the impact of social networks on the ecosystem.
  • Experience in the financial sector is considered an asset.
  • Experience in other areas of marketing and communications is an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in French and English.
